Abortion rights continue to be front-and-center in the news as health care reform (H.R. 3200) maintains its place in the political spotlight. As President Obama pushes hard and fast to get this reform package passed by the end of August, pro-lifers and abortion advocates alike are working tirelessly to see their views win out in the end.

This week, House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, held a private meeting with antiabortion-rights Democrats who threaten the passage of the health reform bill because they “charge that the legislation would make abortion more widely available and more common by requiring insurance plans to pay for the procedures and providing government funding to subsidize plans that pay for them.” (Washington Post) . “Pelosi attempted to broker areas of agreement on the issue. However, antiabortion-rights Democrats contend that, beyond Wednesday’s meeting, Pelosi has not responded to their concerns by making changes to the House bill.” (Roll Call)

In addition, pro-life Republicans are working hard to stop this bill, along with pro-life organizations, such as National Right to Life Committee, Focus on the Family and Americans United for Life (AUL), who have not only demanded an audience with the president to discuss the health care bill, but also joined forces for a rally on Thursday the 23rd, to spread the word of the extreme importance of pro-lifer involvement.
