I am late getting this posted, as I’m traveling again and my air-card was not working yesterday. I can tell you, however, that this post remains on the topic of last week and (what should be) the hottest topic on the hearts and minds of every American: Government-Run Health Care (HR-3200).

The New York Times reports that on July 30th, “by a vote of 35 to 24, Democrats defeated a Republican effort to eliminate a section of the bill that would create the public health insurance option.”

The Times also reports that “on Thursday night, the Energy and Commerce Committee voted to allow health plans to cover or not cover abortion, as they see fit, but stipulated that insurers must use money from private sources to pay for any abortions.”

Further, an amendment was proposed by Representative Lois Capps, Democrat from California, which was approved 30 to 28 by the Democrats. This amendment says “abortion could not be included in the “essential benefits package” to be defined by the government. Further, it said insurers would not be required or forbidden to cover abortion. But, it says, in every part of the country, the government must ensure that there is at least one plan that covers abortion and at least one that does not. Under the bill, health plans would receive federal subsidies to help pay premiums for low-income people. But under the amendment, subsidies could not be used to pay for abortions.“

There is a group of six Republican Senators that are working to draft compromise legislation, but don’t expect it to be ready for “prime time” before they go on their August break. To read the entire article, go here.
