Did you know that one in every three women has had an abortion? In fact, 43% of women of child-bearing age have this secret. And I don’t use the term “secret” lightly. While there is certainly a multitude of unbelieving women out there that tote this secret sadness in their hearts, there are as many BELIEVING women – FORGIVEN, SAVED WOMEN in YOUR CHURCH – who are walking around unhealed. Why? Because they are paralyzed by shame and fear at the thought of surrendering their secret.
You may remember my mentioning  Pat Layton, my friend, and the founder of A Woman’s Place Ministries in Tampa, Florida.  With first-hand experience, she intimately understands the fear and heartache that surrounds women, post-abortion.  After she was saved, she looked for material to help her and others heal, but there was none. So, she and God wrote a study that was used for 20 years at her crisis pregnancy center.  This year, Surrendering the Secret was released in DVD form by Lifeway, in response to the thousands of hurting women that flooded the altar for prayer in this area, after each of their large events. Â
While I, personally, have never experienced this heartbreak, I know several women who have. I bet you do, too. The effects are so far-reaching. As you can imagine, with this situation often being shrouded in secret, even if a woman knows about this study and longs for healing, she’s not likely to buy it herself.  This is why our churches – EVERY ONE OF THEM – need to have a copy.  This is where our giveaway comes in – a chance to win one for YOUR CHURCH, LOCAL CRISIS PREGNANCY OR COUNSELING CENTER…OR TO LEAD YOUR OWN GROUP!
God has recently impressed upon me that we, the blog community, can partner with Lifeway and Pat, to make a BIG DIFFERENCE in this area of secret pain. Just as He multiplied the five loaves to feed thousands (Mark 6:41-44), I’m believing that He will do the same with this giveaway of the Surrendering the Secret study.  So, here it is:
- Five (5) Winners
- One (1) DVD Leader Kit (including DVD study, leader guide and one member book) PER WINNER
- Twelve (12) Member Books PER WINNER
- Click HERE to watch the promo video of the study.
- Giveaway will run through Sunday, October 12th – WINNERS ANNOUNCED MONDAY, OCTOBER 13TH (per random.org) SEE UPDATE BELOW!!
Because it is my heart that the word get out to as many churches and people as possible, I’m going to give you two chances to win:
- Link the giveaway in a post on your own blog, then leave a SECOND comment, including the link to your post. This is NOT about blog promotion, but about spreading the word of healing!
Other ways to get involved:
- Tell your church about the study and work toward getting a copy purchased for their use, if you don’t win.
- Encourage your pastor to discuss abortion from the pulpit and include it in the sins mentioned from the pulpit that are forgiven through Christ. Â There are MANY women who walk away from a sermon feeling like their sin is unforgivable, simply because it’s never mentioned.
- Invite Pat to come and speak to your women’s group and/or leadership about ministering to women in crisis, or to train your leaders to present this study.
- Consider donating financially.
Join me in thanking God in advance for what He will do! Â Praise Him that He will multiply this small mustard seed of faith into a great movement of healing across our nation. Â
THERE IS HOPE AND FREEDOM IN SURRENDERING THE SECRET.
You can make a difference for someone else who is hurting – maybe even for yourself.
UPDATE: While this giveaway has ended, another has JUST BEGUN! Surrendering the Secret has picked up where I left off, and is giving away another FIVE DVD KITS!! Â Head on over right now, and keep the word spreading!!
In His marvelous love,
My father has always said, (well I won’t use his exact words in blogland)
“Our sins will never _____us; our secrets will.”
It’s true. How I pray for the freedom from the secret of abortion that is keeping so many women held captive. Just this morning, we had a guest speaker at SS (a counselor/psychiatrist in his 80’s) who talked about the shame of abortion that so many women carry for years; unless tended to by the truth of Jesus and his forgiveness, most will carry it with them to the grave.
Thanks, Melinda, for your passion in this area. I have a heart for the entire issue (including the rights of the unborn).
This so much relates to my recent post called “My Father’s Heart”–about bringing into the light the evil that we so desperately try to hide.
There is freedom in the light. Always.

Thank you for sharing this resource, Melinda and the other thoughtful blogs you post.

This would be wonderful to put in our new church library.

Thanks for this opportunity, Melinda. Not only could this resource be used by or donated to churches but to pregnancy care centers as well.
Blessings,

So many Christians see abortion as an unforgivable sin – especially those who have had one. Abortion is a loss that most people cannot understand and many refuse to sympathize with. I am glad that women are reaching out to other women and recognizing the need for healing.
Sweet Melinda,
Every time I read this I cry again! You are so precious.
The fact that you have never had an abortion and still really “GET” this heartbreak in women is evidence of the tender heart that God has stirred in you.
I am excited to see who will win the contest and and deeply grateful for your generosity and love,
HUGE Blessing right back to you!
Pat
Dear Melinda,
Would that we were closer, share a cup a joe, while pouring over the Word, praying the house down and jumping up to our ears in spreading the saving grace of our sweet Savior. Since that is not the case I’ll grab my cup and jump in from here! Thank you for passing a candle to help shed light into this darkness.
My heart is bursting and tears flowing. oh, yah…Count me in…I’ll be posting and sending…whoever on over.
Dear Lord let this bring the healing only You can bring!
I would love to win this for my church library! Thanks!
Melinda,
Thank you for your compassion. There are so many that do not want to deal with this issue. I am hoping that I can donate this to a church in our community, and like you said, that it will make the rounds from church to church ministering to many.
oh what an amazing giveaway! thank you so much for hosting it!
We’re in the process of re-building our church home after two years of heart-wrenching transition. I think this would be a God-sent addition to our new library shelves.
God Bless you!
I would love to have this to add to the safe harbor ministries at my church. We offer many different classes, from help from sexual abuse to divorce care, and many more. I think this is somthing that would add to our groups. Even if I don’t win I am going to see if we can add this next semester. Thanks for the info.
I am in a small church with a newly started women’s ministry and this would be a great resource for our church and our community as an outreach tool.
Melanie
I am a Certified Biblical Counselor for women, and post-abortion trauma is a common scenario I see in my office. This sounds like a tool I need to have as a resource for sure!
This is the best giveaway I’ve seen yet. Thank you for your commitment to the cause.
Hey Melinda,
Tammy sent me over here. And I’ve got to say, I’m very excited about this resource. I’ve worked in women’s ministry for the last 15 years or so and you’re right this is an area that needs addressing!! No more secrets. Let’s let Him have complete access and furthermore we as women need to SUPPORT each other for healing, especially in the area of abortion. Can’t wait to take an eve closer look at this resource.
Much love,
~Cheryl
I don’t have a blog of my own, but as a psychotherapist who specializes reproductive mental-health concerns with clients at work, and supports our local Project Rachel post-abortion ministry, I’d love to lead this bible study at our church!
Camie
Thank you Melinda for a fabulous giveaway!! Sign me up!
Have a wonderful Monday!

I am actively involved with helping post abortive women seek healing and am so happy to see this new study.
I will be posting and sending your message.
I had to post anonomously because the server wouldn’t post any other way.
Keep up the good work.

Hey Melinda!
Been a busy night and to think I planned to post on fish tales and adventures in a maze a corn!
What ever was I thinking! You and God had other plans.
I’ve done something I do NOT do and that’s promote and add links from other peoples blogs to this one. Oh well, too important to let etiquette get in the way. I love this age we’re living in and the use of such a medium and that our God is in the thick of it. You can find my post and a link here and from a couple dozen comment post across the web of people whom I admire, sorry it is not more.
Love you sweet Sister,
tammy
I think this topic is a wonderful one to get out in the open, albeit a very difficult one to discuss.
Enter me!
I hope I’ve linked this correctly: http://cathy-davis.blogspot.com/2008/10/surrendering-secret.html
I will work on a post for tomorrow.
You are so right, so many women need healing.
Bless you for this, friend.
~Donna
You are so good for doing this, and God is so awesome for his desire to heal such a sad wound
This is so awesome. I have some friends that have had abortions (years ago) and I have seen how it has affected their lives. I pray that God will use this in a miraculous way to reach many broken and hurting women. Thank you!
I saw this study advertised on the back of my summer quarterly/Sunday School book. (Are they still called quarterlies or is that old school?) Anyway, I remember showing it to my husband and commenting how badly this is needed and how churches would never offer it, and even if they did, women wouldn’t go to it. It’s a problem, but I want to be part of the solution.
What a blessing you are for offering this study. I first saw this study at the Deeper Still conference here in Vegas and my heart just dropped. I have shared with many other women my testimony and could not believe how many others have gone through this. I have often wondered if there would ever be a study published on this that I could go through with other women struggling with this heartbreak.
Thank you so much!
This would be such a valuable study for our church to have. So please sign me up. I know many women who could benefit from it. The guilt, shame and heartbreak that women who have had an abortion is huge to say the least.
So sign me up, Thanks for the opportunity. Kim B. in AZ ([email protected])
Thanks again Melinda!!
I hope I did the 2nd posting right:

I just had a very good friend share their secret with me this weekend. This is just God-timing! Thanks!

This is desperately needed.
It is one of our cherished goals here in Chile (where we serve as missionaries) to reach out to women who carry this secret even more heavily shrouded due to abortion being illegal in this country (yet Chile continues to have one of the highest abortion rates in Latin America.) Thank you for making me aware of this resource!
Thank your for the opportunity to receive this wonderful set. This could be used or given to churches or to the pregnancy care center in our small town.

I posted earlier and didn’t post my blog address. Keep up the good work, I have posted the contest on my blog “I’m Free” at
amyhwaddell.blogspot.com
I have so many friends who are carrying this secret. At least 5 have shared it with me over the years. 4 of them know each other, and don’t know they share this same secret. I would love to do this study with them and then donate it to my church. I don’t have my own blog, so I guess can only enter once instead of twice. But that’s okay… if God wants me to use it in this avenue with them, my one time will be enough. 🙂
Odd coincidence (even though I think probably not a coincidence) — at the local fair here last week, we took the kids and rode some rides and ate some funnel cakes… When we were walking through the exhibit hall, there was a right to life booth. They had little 12 week old baby figures that were SO lifelike in appearance. I’d never seen anything like that before that you could hold in your hand, and imagine an unborn baby. See their fingers and toes and little closed eyes. You could buy one for 75 cents, and it came with a little card telling what a baby does at every week from week 1 to week 12. So I bought 3 of them. I’ve had 3 miscarriages, and just wanted these little figures to have and remember those babies by. It was precious watching my daughter help me pick them out of the basket. Fought tears all the way home holding them in my hand.
Just neat that that happened last week, and now this week I’m learning about this study for the first time.
Thank you, Pat, for doing this study. And Thank you, Melinda, for this opportunity to get one.
If I don’t win one, I’ll try to save up my money and buy one.
Did you ever think that maybe women keep their secret not because of the shame but because it is no one’s business but their own?
I was amazed at how many of my counseling clients had either had an abortion or were considering one. And they were young college students!
Your passion for post-abortion healing is awesome, and I would love to be a part of that healing in the lives of more women. Thank you for the awesome giveaway.
I have several friends that share this secret with me — we would love to be able to work through this study together. Thank you for your thoughtful comments on how it feels to be dealing with the shame and anguish of a decision I made as a young girl when I was naive and uninformed.
What a good resource for women within the church who need counseling for their pain. Thank you for the information.
I was at a ladies retreat one time and out of the 9 ladies there, 5 of them had had an abortion. It was at that moment God spoke to me and said, “who do you think it is that has had all these abortions? It’s not just prostitutes, it’s the women that sit in the pews of your church!”
I’ve ben trying to find the path that God wants me to take in this type of ministry ever since. This bible study will be a mighty tool in helping women heal.
Thanks for offering this!
Putting in my second comment. Thank you for letting me know. In Paris right now, so I hope this works…the blog sites seem to be the only thing remotely working online…good thing.
Many blessings to ya!
ps…Pat stopped by; I feel so special!
What a wonderful resource that is desperately needed.
To Anonymous who wrote:

I would agree with you that not everyone who has an abortion needs to stand up and share their experience with the world. It is a very private issue. However, I believe that most women are in bondage over this and satan would like nothing more than to keep them there. Too many women hid this experience for fear that they will not be accepted by family, friends, and unfortunately the church. Those of us who can stand up and be transparent can help lead other to freedom through the grace of our Lord. Grace…such an amazing little word. Coupled with forgiveness that comes from Christ…one can find freedom! And that’s what women need…Freedom!
Blessings,
Kimberly

This is a great resource and if I win, I’ll be donating it to the CareNet Crisis Pregnancy Center in Summerville, Georgia. Luke and I have volunteered there and it is a heavily visited center. I know they would be delighted to use this as a bible study option for the women who come for counseling.
I would LOVE to win this. I know women very near and dear to me that suffer with this secret shame. Bless you for sharing this!
Thanks for doing this! I volunteer at a local CPC center and see first hand the pain from abortion.

So many wonderful women are stuck in shame and guilt. May she dvd bring to light the freedom in releasing guilt and shame.
Thank you so much for introducing this important study to your readers. I used to volunteer at A Woman’s Place before relocating and I know firsthand that it is a wonderful ministry. This study is an important resource for women to hear the Truth. Through you, it will reach many women. Thanks for what you do!
I had no idea that the numbers were that high (1 in 3!). There is certainly a big ministry need there. I don’t know that our current church is addressing this need. Definitely something to bring up.
What an awesome way to get the word out! A dear friend of mine kept her secret for years, but as a speaker now, she finds more people want to hear about that and her healing more than anything.
Thank you for doing this!
Thanks for being a conduit of Christ love.
This would be fantastic for our church library.
Thank You

What a wonderful opportunity to reach out to those suffering from the shame and pain that an abortion can bring. I wrote about my personal experiences with abortion in my Testimony so I am excited to see the healing this book can bring to those hurting.

What a wonderful resource. God is really dealing with me to help others in my church to realize that healing in our pain can’t come until we are able to open up about it and we aren’t willing to open up about our pains because of a fear of judgment. I would love to have this resource for our ladies. I pray it blesses whomever receives it!
Whoops, left the wrong link! It’s here.
I just posted a link on my blog. Thanks for doing this. What a blessing it’s going to be to many!

Our church purchased the DVD’s and we have already had one STS Bible Study. The first one went so well that we are getting ready to do another one, starting in November. Please pray that the women who need to come to this study will have the courage to show up and surrender their secret. Thanks for this post.
I am currently going through this material as God prepares me to bring it to women in my community. Praise Him for His redeeming love and healing mercy! It would be a blessing to also receive a starter kit! Thank you for the opportunity!
Melinda – I seriously thought I commented a couple days ago (or was it yesterday?) when Tammy sent me over. I’m definitely behind you with this. Thanks for getting the word out, and doing something with this. God bless.
I have been thinking so much about what you wrote here, and I posted something on my blog. http://findinghimbigger.blogspot.com/2008/10/on-more-serious-note.html
Thank you for your words and encouragement!
annie from “calling to deep” sent me over here.
this seems like a great study! and how wonderful that you are giving it away. that is fantastic.
i am a woman that revealed her little secrets late in life. i had 2 abortions as a teenager and am currently writing a book called, “The Day I Told My Daughter”.
Forgiveness abounds and sharing it is so freeing. women dont realize how their secret becomes such a burden. they get used to it, it becomes their normal. it also becomes their trap.
i pray this giveaway unlocks some doors and goes to the people who need it the most.
thanks for doing this!
Thank you for this amazing opportunity and for your heart of service!
This is awesome! I’m going to print this out and give some copies to women in my church. What a ministry!
Thank you again:

Hi Melinda,
I am so excited to see that you are giving away the kit and leader guides! I have been praying about how to raise donations to purchase the kit in order to start an abortion recovery group in my area. I am involved in the National Helpline for Abortion Recovery, 1866-482-5433 and there is NO groups at all. I am starting a group as soon as I can get the material!! I am already involved with the local pregnancy center and we will be able to now offer the group to our post abortive clients. I pray that we will win and can get the healing process started. I will be using the kit to train other leaders in my area! Thank you and God bless,
Michelle, Lafayette, Louisiana

This was completely eye opening for me. It looks excellent!
Dear Melinda,
Thank you for giving this opportunity to win this “gift that will keep on giving.” my sister and i are trying to start an abortion healing prayer group in our area, as we have none for the women in our area that need healing so badly but have no place to turn and do not know there is even a place to turn! this kit would be a god send to us, as we follow God’s calling for our lives. Thanks for the opportunity and God bless.

What a blessing this study could be to so many women. One of my best friends had an abortion this past year. She didn’t tell me that she was even pregnant until months after her abortion. This would be a great educational tool for those ministering to those who are hurting and for those who have gone through it. Thanks for the opportunity to win.
Posted a blog …. http://www.weavs.blogspot.com
As I prepare to complete my studies to obtain my nurse practitioner I know God is leading me in the direction of women’s health. I am sure this would be a resource, along with God’s guidance, I would use in my practice.
Blessings~ Angela
Hi Melinda,
Thanks for stopping by! Here’s my blog http://recordingsnow.blogspot.com/
Thanks again for doing this great giveaway! God bless you.
What an awesome give away. Thank you for offering it. As the mother of a son who “almost wasn’t” (I still thank God for my father that night), I can only go so far in imagining the fear, confusion and pain that surrounds this decision. God blessed me by stopping me before I could go through with it and saying that I am grateful for that is an incredible understatement. I have never carried another pregnancy full term. The guilt I carried for so long over almost going through with it is nothing, I’m sure, compared to what those who did feel. I’d love to share this study with LifeChoices, a ministry in my area that helps women see they have other options. Off to write my post…
I had to do this quickly…off to sleep. Blessings and thank you again for doing this.

Melinda, thank you so much for doing this. I work with post-abortive women and the pain is staggering. I am so excited about these new resources and would love to win. Count me in.

Melinda,
I am leaving a comment to be entered in the drawing… I haven’t first hand dealt with this pain, but I know of someone who is thinking about having an abortion. She is I think 16. And the only few people that know is my one friend(she is 17) and her father (who is a worship pastor at my church)…. so not a lot of people know about this and she does not want to tell her parents. If I win I would donate it to The Peacemaker Center which is a Christian Counseling Center that is connected with my church. Thank you for this opportunity!
I have a dear sister who had an abortion many years ago, and I pray for her salvation and lifting of her burden to Christ. If I’m chosen to win this book, I told God that I’d give it to her — from Him, and from me. So now it’s up to him…

Thanks for reaching out to hurting women and their “secret sin.” It is so awesome to know we have such an awesome and forgiving God that provides us with grace and healing. I would love to have this book and share with my sister and then donate it to my church library. God Bless!

Sweet Sisters,
I am on vacation in the mountains with my honey. It is cold and raining and WONDERFUL!!
We have no phone but we have internet (Yeah)!
This blog is like a magnet and I am so grateful not to be missing any of this!
I am so excited to see what God has done through my sweet friend Melinda. Your comments are keeping me on my knees.
I love the Body of Christ (especially surrendered sisters) and really wish that I could hug each of you.
Thank you for your kindness and love for one another, you have blessed my socks off!
In His Grip!!

This would make a great addition to our church library. Thank you for the opportunity to win.
I have carried this secret for years. It is so heavy. 2 years ago I laid it at the feet of my Lord and just last night at our W.M. leadership meeting the Lord pressed it on my heart to final speak to them about what a need this is in our community and church. I don’t know where the Lord is taking me with this but I know that He is leading the way….

Oh, I need to do this study. Hopefully God will provide this through this contest or another way. Thanks for this awesome opportunity and making women aware there is even a study that acknowledges the pain of this.
Thank you & God bless,
Lelia
I feel my heart being called to reach out to share my own secret and reach out to others who experience this same pain. Thank you for following God’s call to your heart!
As our churches women’s ministry grows this woulod be an excellent tool for us. Last year we did “The Emotionally Healthy Church” and I think that this is a great next step. Thanks for the opportunity to provide this to my church if I’m the winner!
Oh thank you Melinda for promoting this incredibly God-infused study on your site, and an extra big thank you for offering the giveaway. I'm a member of a very large Texas Baptist church, and I am so proud of them for allowing me to pitch this study to them…and have the extra blessing of facilitating it for them. My own ministry (Wounded No More) is in its infancy, and its first anchor will be the Surrendering the Secret study in 2009. It would be such a bonus to win the set for my own library, and provide the books for free to the precious ladies that will be called to be healed through my upcoming neighborhood group. I've ministered to women in prison with an abortion recovery ministry, and look forward to helping the ones that have been released from prison & no longer want to stay wounded due to the guilt and shame from a past abortion. These women truly want to serve God, but the evil one is relentless at keeping them wounded, and they don't feel that God can truly use them for His work. In their case, their lives were an open book while in prison. You would think that they wouldn't have a problem in surrendering the secret of their abortion. Well, I found out that a woman incarcerated is just as hesitant and shame-filled as one that is in the free world. All women need to feel free to serve God in the incredible ways that He has planned for us to thrive…not just live. Again, thank you sweet lady!
Please add me to your giveaway drawing.
In much love and gratitude,
DS
This would be such a wonderful resource for our church and for my own library to lend out to women God leads my way. Thank you for offering this. Blessings.

Hello Melinda,
I’ve come here from a post on Lysa Terkeurst’s blog, and until I read hers, I had no idea that this secret affects so many women. I know it certainly isn’t talked about in our church, or even in churches in our area, and I would like to enter this draw, so that I can do my bit to help. With the figures you gave of one in three women affected, I know that it would be put to good use in ou r church library. Thank you for the good work you are doing.

Our church is doing that study for the second time this year….it has been a blessing for many already. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for offering this give away! This would be such a beneficial tool to my ministry to at risk and pregnant teens, and women who have been abused. I’ve already done some PAS counseling with some of the ladies. Our ministry board is meeting the end of the month with a crisis pregnancy center. We’re praying about opening a center in our facility since there’s not one in ouor county.
I will try and get a post up Friday about this series.
Blessings to you this day.
Although a believer since childhood, I had an abortion at age 22. For 15 years, it remained my deep, dark secret. The guilt and shame clung to me. I had asked God for forgiveness, but I had not accepted it. Didn’t truly believe it was possible. But this spring, God decided it was time for me to listen up. He led me to share my story with a small biblical community of friends, one of whom later told me about STS. I am now overjoyed to report that my identity is no longer that of a post-abortive woman. I am a woman of TRUTH (1 John 1:5-7), and my identity is in Christ and who He says I am. I am a new creation in Christ! God has been faithful to do what He said He would do. He has set a captive free! (Isaiah 61). I am seeking the Lord’s will for how to share my story going forward. I believe He could be leading me to co-lead an STS group in the near future. God bless you, Pat, for hearing and following your divine calling to write this study. And thank you, Melinda, for promoting this incredible resource for healing and encouraging women to walk in the light as He is in the light.

Hi Melinda,
Thank you for hosting this “giveaway”. I am one of those 43% of women guarding my “secret”. I had experienced some healing years ago from my abortion, but, believe God is showing me that some more layers need to be peeled away and given to him for deeper healing. This looks like a good study to start that process. Thank you for sharing your heart. ~Jodie
