Open Eyes
I'm an observer. I'm usually very aware of what's going on around me, whether it's the goings on of nature, human interaction, or the physical surroundings themselves. I just notice things; it's the way I'm wired. Actually, I think it's the way we were all originally wired. It's why we have five senses, so we have many different ways to experience our own life and life as it happens around us. But then, along came technology. Along came lap tops and tablets and smart phones. Along came social media. Don't get me wrong. I love all my devices, and social media is amazing. I have incredible connections and crazy, "only God"- type things that have happened (and are happening) through...
Take a Load Off
My little miniature dachshund, Riley, is of the long-hair variety. He has beautiful, long silky hair, and his characteristic long ears are also covered with wavy locks. He's really quite the looker. We got him when we lived in Florida, and as his hair grew out, all it really required was some brushing now and then to keep it looking good. When we went on walks, it was by and large on pavement, and he stayed nice and clean. Then we moved to Texas. After bouncing around between a few residences (long story...another day) we ended up out here on the ranch. So, Riley started to adjust to his new surroundings. With the only pavement on the main road, everywhere he walked was not just...
And It Was So
I started reading through the Chronological Bible yesterday (if you didn't know, the Bible isn't laid out chronologically, so reading through it in a timeline fashion can really help put the whole of it in perspective and help you understand how it fit within world historical events). Of course, I started in Genesis, because that's the beginning, no matter how you slice it. I was reading along about creation and how God would speak something into existence and it would be done. Over and over He would say "Let there be (water or land or sky...)" and it was followed up by this: And it was so. I spent the better part of the day with that four word phrase tumbling around in my head like...
So Much More
I was in a store recently with a large display of televisions for sale. You've seen it before; all of them are playing the same movie at the same time, and often something animated that shows the fabulous clarity of the always evolving technology. This day they were all showing The Lion King. I wasn't shopping for a TV, so I was just passing by, but I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard Mufasa telling Simba this: You have forgotten who you are, and so have forgotten me. Look inside yourself Simba, you are more than you have become. Okay, Mufasa. I don't know about Simba, but you have my attention. I suspect that you, like me, struggle at times with the whole purpose thing, and...
A Season for Gifts
"Christmas. It's all about the gifts, now, so it seems." This was the thought that permeated my mind as I wrapped what was purchased and perused the list of what remained to be. The commercialization of Christmas is something that we all grouse about during the holidays, at some point. It seems to start even before Halloween, now, leaving Thanksgiving as a kind of stuff-yourself preamble to what is really the main attraction. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Christmas. But the commercial shopping push always rubs me the wrong way. I enjoy buying something for my loved ones that I believe they'll love. A gift that maybe they've eluded to during the year, or will touch on something that has...
