The Blank Page

I awoke to the rumblings of thunder in the distance, the room darker for the time of day than it has been recently. Craving a cup of hot tea and some quiet time, I crept out of bed and grabbed my Bible. On a friend's suggestion of reading through the Proverbs when seeking wisdom and guidance, I cracked it open. What are the Proverbs for? Have you ever really studied them? While they are certainly a collection of wise and pithy sayings, they, like everything else in the Word, are written for a purpose which is recounted here from the first chapter:1 These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. 2 Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them...

Different Strokes

Since we've been in Texas, we've been doing what new-to-town, church-going people do: visiting a lot of different churches. We each have a list in our heads and hearts of things in a church that are important to us, and we've narrowed it down to a couple that have warranted return visits. One of these has a "contemporary" service (praise band and contemporary songs) at 9:15 and a "traditional" service (full orchestra, 100+ person choir and hymns) at 11:30. Because we've been members of non-denominational, contemporary churches for our entire married lives, we have been attending the first service. I feel certain there are many more of you that have your own stories, but the most important thing is that you're out there using your voice to make a difference. You'd have to be living under a rock to not be confronted with all the negative press that the "extreme right" and "anti-abortion rights" people are getting at town hall meetings. I thought it was interesting that even the president said that out of twenty productive town hall meetings, it would be the one where...

Getting Flat

I walked Riley out the other day and saw this scene: a squirrel lying completely flat in the shade of a tree. He allowed us to walk right past him, seemingly unphased by our presence, and I couldn't take my eyes off him. I've seldom seen a squirrel do what I assume to be a "cooling off ritual," and certainly not without it scampering off the minute a human scent hit the air.It occurred to me all of a sudden what a good example this little squirrel was. When the heat became too much, he spread himself flat on the cool of the ground, not allowing himself to be distracted. Isn't that what we've been taught to do? Get down on all fours in a burning house to escape the heat, find clear air and...
