The Low Road Revisited
It all started with a certain cheesecake recipe. That one little foray off the dieting high road was the hairline crack, the chink in the armor that the ever-watchful enemy needed to worm his way in. And I was doing so well. In the days following that blitz of sugar-infused hysteria, my iron will seemed to be changing bit by bit into something more along the lines of...oh, I don't know, shaving cream will. While it might give the appearance of some sort of barrier, it's really not fooling anybody. Yep, the ole taste-buds got a quick reintroduction to an old friend and suddenly, their lust was insatiable! I found myself driven to frozen foods for ice cream and pulled by some unseen...
Beyond Skin-Deep
I was passing by the television during a Dove Soap commercial, and I stopped because it really wasn't about soap. It was about young girls and self-esteem. They were promoting their Campaign for Real Beauty, a program that funds self-esteem classes and awareness.I came to my computer to check out the web site and found a series of short films that they produced for commercial use. They are astonishing. What you see above is called "Evolution" - a look at a print ad filmed from beginning to finished product aimed at showing young girls the reality of what they see in their favorite beauty magazines. The other one that blew me away is called "Onslaught" and can be viewed HERE. I chose not to...
Oh Say Can You See?
You probably expected to see a photo of fireworks or perhaps a flag, but turkeys? Yes, turkeys. Perhaps you recall seeing another photo of turkeys in a post just prior to Easter of this year. There is just something about the turkeys here in Central Florida; they apparently love a holiday!I've loved seeing them out my window during these holidays, because the very first thing I think of when I see them is Thanksgiving. Since both Easter and Independence Day celebrate extraordinary gifts of freedom, we should be raising the roof with shouts of thanks! This day marks our FREEDOM in our country to celebrate the FREEDOM we have through the death and subsequent conquering of death...
Everyday Reality
Yesterday, I packed the tools of my quiet respite at the beach - my Bible and commentaries, my bible studies and books, candles and bubble bath, tea bags, comfy jammies, beachwear, Ipod and four-legged sidekick, and headed home. The beach-side restaurants, t-shirt shops and dolphin-watching tour stands gave way to the expressway, skyscrapers, Target and gas stations offering a gallon of gas for $4.12.Reality. Sometimes enough to suck the life right out of you.As I made my way toward home, my thoughts started to shift. The brain space that had just an hour earlier been filled with the fullness of God was now being filled with the fullness of my to-do list. Really, I wanted to turn right...
What's in a Name? – An Addendum
Since I posted about the Names of God a couple of days ago, more of them have been popping in my head. That list was, by no means, comprehensive! I especially love the Hebrew names of God in the Old Testament. Just uttering them aloud makes me feel safe, due to the solid, steadfast nature of each word. And I don't think that's by accident! I wanted to share some with you:ELOHIM - "God; a reference to His power and might" - Genesis 1:1, Psalm 19:1ADONAI - "Lord; a reference to the Lordship of God" - Malachi 1:6JEHOVAH YAHWEH - "A reference to God's divine salvation" - Genesis 2:4JEHOVAH MACCADDESHEM - "the Lord thy sanctifier" - Exodus 31:13JEHOVAH ROHI - "the Lord my shepherd" - Psalm...
