Preparing for Rain
My good friend Lisa, after reading my last post, sent me an excited email asking if she had missed a good "God story". She happened to be privy to a little piece of information that, somehow, I forgot to blog - and it's important! Let me explain...E doesn't actually have a dorm room yet. Yep, you read that right! Because she applied to and was accepted to her school so late, we knew it was probably a long shot that she would be assigned housing right away. She was placed on the wait list, at the beginning of June, at number 374. Hubs and I really wanted her to be on campus the first year, but the planner in me was ready to start checking out apartments, etc., just in case. Certainly, we...
Pack 'em up and Ship 'em out
I'm getting ready to do some traveling. E and I leave Thursday for Freshman Orientation. We are starting the daunting task of getting her new college abode furnished. Fortunately, these "dorms" are furnished with actual furniture, but she still has to have all of the other accoutrements that other college kids have to have (except maybe those poor souls who actually have to schlep it in one room and a community bath - like I did!). I am part of that esteemed group of glassy-eyed parents following bubbly teens through Target, Walmart and Bed Bath and Beyond, no longer looking at price tags, but numbly handing over the debit card at yet another register! All kidding (sort of) aside, it's...
10 Random Things About Myself
My sweet friend Amy has "tagged" me with a request to list 10 random things about myself. As she mentioned in her blog, this is not as easy to do as you might think! Even so, here goes...I cannot emphasize enough, the importance I place on the nightly ritual of taking a bath. Not a shower, a BATH. A long, relaxing soak in sweet smelling bubbles. And, yes, I did this when my kids were little, too. In fact, that's when it started - my only time to myself!I was crowned "Little Miss Plano" (Plano, Texas) in 1968, and reigned for 15 years until they had the contest again! Incidentally, I'm not sure I would've won if the little girl that was to walk out first hadn't wet her pants just before her...
Good Things…BEST Things
I read a quote recently, that I have actually lived. "Even a good thing can weigh us down if it isn't the best thing." Oh, how true that is.There are a lot of good things out there. Causes worthy of our time, church or civic projects needy of our talents, studies that will enrich our lives, and on and on. In fact, there are SO many options that it is often hard to discern what we need to do...or NOT do. If they're all worthwhile, then shouldn't we give ourselves over to every one? The answer, of course, is NO. However, NO is a lesson hard-learned. Several years ago, I was a God-serving maniac. That almost sounds a little irreverent, but let me explain. I was all of the following at my...
Birds of Differing Feathers
I saw something today that I've never seen before. On top of a neighbor's roof, I witnessed a feathery version of David and Goliath. A tiny little bird of an unknown variety (there are a LOT of those here in Florida!) was dive-bombing a very large hawk. Now, I've seen birds dive at each other before, but never with such a large size difference. I watched for a solid five minutes as this little guy screeched and pecked and flew at the hawk's head with dogged determination as the hawk sat perfectly still, seemingly unfazed. All of a sudden, though, it apparently became too much, and the hawk fled. He didn't lift off with stoic indifference. He fled. Now, this was all very interesting to me,...
