Amber Waves of Grain…or Grass
About three weeks ago, Kevin threw his back out. He's done it before, but this time was a lot worse, and when it happened the lawn needed to be mowed. It's quite a bit of grass that we mow around the house, and it was looking pretty shaggy. I can't mow because I'm crazy allergic to grass (something that should've been clear to me in all my years of mowing other lawns, at other houses, with my nose running freely down my shirt), so we asked Maddie if she would do it and discovered that the mower wasn't working. Leaving it be until Kevin was fully healed and could address everything, the grass grew. And grew. And grew. By the time he was better, it seemed such a mammoth project that...
His Words (about false teaching)
Every Sunday around here is for His Words instead of mine. There has been a lot of buzz lately about controversy surrounding prominent pastors (of both word and song), and their radical shift in beliefs. Though what they say does not line up with scripture, they still stand on their own word in the name of the Lord. He has something to say about that. For the time is coming when people will not endure soundteaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. ~ 2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV Dearly loved friends, don’t always believe everything you hear just...
Stairway to Heaven
I believe it was last year when I first heard it. I was blown completely away. Then I heard it again, today, and I bet I've played it 10 times. If you're also a child of the 70's, it'll strike a chord in you, too. But really? It should strike a chord no matter how old you are. What am I talking about? Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band Heart, presenting their version of the Led Zeppelin song "Stairway to Heaven" at the Lincoln Center tribute to that legendary band. Its members, tuxedo-clad, watched in rapt awe from the prestigious state box. Before I go any further, you need to hear it. Go ahead. I'll wait right here until you're done. Amazing, isn't it? You know, Ann...
My Daughter’s Birthday Blog (and why I’ll never forget it again)
You know, sometimes you don't realize what your words mean to a person. My youngest daughter is 25 today. She has received a gift from us, has had messages from the whole family, and I've talked to her on the phone twice. But when I asked her if she'd seen my Facebook post, she said, "Yes...but where was my birthday blog?" I didn't write one this morning. I really didn't think it meant that much to her, but apparently I was wrong, and she reminded me of another year when I didn't write, and how she'd asked my why, even back then. You know what? I won't forget again, because words have a heavy weight. We toss them around like feathers, but they land as either bricks or cozy blankets,...
His Words (for when you’re afraid)
Every Sunday around here is for His Words instead of mine. Everyone feels afraid sometimes, maybe even today. He has something to say about that. For I hold you by your right hand— I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you. ~ Isaiah 41:13 NLT This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. ~ Joshua 1:9 NLT I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. ~ Psalm 34:4 ESV The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe. ~ Proverbs 29:25 ESV So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful...
