His Words (for when you need God to move)

Every Sunday around here is for His words instead of mine. If you are going through a time of waiting on God to move in an area of your life, read on. Meanwhile, friends, wait patiently for the Master’s Arrival. You see farmers do this all the time, waiting for their valuable crops to mature, patiently letting the rain do its slow but sure work. Be patient like that. Stay steady and strong. The Master could arrive at any time. ~ James 5:7-8 MSG Don’t overlook the obvious here, friends. With God, one day is as good as a thousand years, a thousand years as a day. God isn’t late with his promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining himself on account of you, holding back the End...

At the End of the Day (or the beginning…)

...you realize that you really have too much going on this month (this summer, really, but let's not get carried away), to effectively write every day. It occurs to you that it's only the once or twice a week post that is really singing, and truly conveying what's on your heart, so why not write that way again, at least for a while? At first, that commitment to everyday writing for a year, that you made some 237 days ago (602 if you really want to go back to the beginning), really gnaws at you, because you're a people-pleaser (which is really just another word for too much self-importance). But people don't need more noise in their lives, (especially when what you're currently...

Green Grass and Good Water

Green Grass and Good Water

There are a million memes that pop up in my social media feeds every day. Every. Single. Day. But every so often, one pops up that knocks my socks off, and yesterday delivered such a powerhouse. It's something, isn't it? The thing is, it's a very obvious thought, full of common sense, but really we don't get it most of the time. We stand on our side of the fence, grass withering into a sad, late-Texas-summer brown, while we lean on the fence, gazing at our neighbor's lush carpet of green, wondering how they got so lucky to have such a great lawn. They must make enough money to hire a service. They probably inherited that house, and it's prime piece of ground, from a rich uncle. They...

The Sound of Silence (Rewind)

The Sound of Silence (Rewind)

This weekend, while working in the yard, I was listening to Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits. "The Sound of Silence" came on and I was hit, afresh, by the lyric, remembering, only after it was over, that I'd written about it before. I've been singing it since, unable to shake how fresh it is. I just went back and reread my original post, deciding it was worth a rewind. Hopefully, you'll think so, too.   I occasionally have an "oldies" Pandora station playing while I work. Yesterday was such a day, and the familiar strains of a Simon and Garfunkel classic began to fill the room. Hello darkness, my old friend...I've come to talk with you again... I stopped typing and just...

On Birds, Windows, and Life

We've had some delicious rain the last couple of days. Actually, this has been a delightfully wet spring, music to the ears of draught-weary Texans, and we have been soaking it all in, at least as much as the grass. With the rain, however, has come cloud-cover, and the windows across the back of my house have turned into mirrors. While this is no big deal for the humans, canines, and felines who roam the property, it poses a big problem for the birds. CRASH. WAMMO. SPLAT. It's seriously like watching an episode of 70's-version Batman. Those birds go careening into the windows at full speed, since it just looks like a continuation of their surroundings, and while some of them are...
