When Nothing is Something

It was an interesting afternoon. What started out as a pretty normal Wednesday, turned out differently altogether. I headed into the pregnancy center, like I do every Wednesday, and when the clinic turned out to be quiet, I helped out with sorting donations and finishing a typing project for an upcoming adoption fair. No big deal, until I got an interruption that needed my immediate attention. My plans to stop at the store on the way home were thwarted, and when I finally got home to make dinner, I stood there, refrigerator agape, and saw exactly... Nothing. Just as I was about to call Kevin to pick something up on his way home, he was pulling in the driveway. This is where I would...

The Common Thread

I had my first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the year yesterday. It's a small tradition that I celebrate - just me and the cup - to usher in my favorite season. Yes, it was in the 90's outside, but hey, it was overcast and had the illusion of being nippy out. And, when I had the first sip, it was all colorful leaves and steaming pots of chili in my mind. I love fall. When the air does eventually cool down and I start to pull out sweaters and my Snuggie (woohoo!), I'm invigorated in a way I don't experience the rest of the year. My mind starts to turn to the steady succession of fun and meaningful holidays, and the other many traditions they bring. What is a tradition? Here's the...

Observations on the Job-Hunt

This is a bit of a departure from what I usually write. However, I felt compelled to get some thoughts "out there," in hopes that they might fall on the right ears and, perhaps, make an impression toward the right road for the young job-seeker. Several months ago, I stepped into, very unexpectedly, the role of recruiting coordinator for my husband. He is in the insurance and financial services industry, and while he does lots of face-to-face recruiting, he needed someone to help him with social media and passive recruiting, as well as building a pool of "warm" talent. To say that this has been an enlightening experience would be a gross understatement. I am on all the major resume...

Mimmie’s Heart: Letters to Brody #2

Mimmie’s Heart: Letters to Brody #2

My sweet Brody…when you get to be as old as your Mimmie, you might start to realize there are things you wish you’d said more intentionally to your own kids, as they were growing up, or, at the very least, you’ll wish you had said them better. I heard once that grandchildren can be a kind of “do-over.” I don’t agree with that entirely, for you are not mine to raise, day in and day out. However, because I am removed from the constancy of your daily care, I think those things that need saying can rise more easily, and with greater clarity, to the top of my heart. It’s my hope that this letter (and the ones to follow in years to come) will help make your life’s road a little easier to travel....

The Swing

The Swing

If you follow me on social media, you know about my swing. I talk about it quite a bit, as it's a place of respite for me. Lately, however, I've had no time for its pleasures. The pace of my life has taken a turn that even NASCAR would envy, and being a person who doesn't handle that speed very well, at least for very long, I've been looking longingly out the window at my wooden friend, wishing for a moment or two to enjoy its company. That moment came this weekend. Saturday, Kevin had a special reunion of sorts, on the golf course, with a bunch of his old football friends and coaches, and Sunday, he and Maddie spent the afternoon on some barn projects. I had two whole days...
